The answer is no. But from facts and observations, the most successful Internet Marketers have been building lists since many years ago. Over the years, they’ve accumulated millions (no mistake there) of email addresses and they can market to these people over and over again as long as they remain on that list.
Is it profitable for them? Think about this. If you can just convert 1% of 10,000 leads to buy your digital product at a price of $97, how much would you make? 1% would mean selling 100 copies, and 100 copies at $97 will make you $9700.
It costs you nothing to send out an email. And that email just made in $9700. Imagine doing that every month. How much would you make? And that’s just from a list of 10,000 members. What if you have 50,000 members? Or even 100,000 members and above. How much would you make?
Yet I know of Internet Marketers who earned a five-figure income without building a list. How do they do this? They drove traffic directly to the merchant’s sales page. And if they end up buying a product or signing up for some offer, the marketers get a commission. Traffic is driven from various sources like Google AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing and so on.
What is happening here is that these Marketers are taking advantage of a situation. They’ve tested the offers, find that they convert well, and made it their responsibility to drive targeted traffic to these websites. There are thousands of profitable websites on the Internet. Although it can take some time and effort to test out these websites, but it’s certainly worth the time and effort when they do find them.
This model can work for a while. But if you’re a new Internet Marketer, my advice to you is that it’s in your best interest to build a list. Don’t resist it. You’ll profit from taking the plunge. Here’s why I strongly recommend taking the plunge.
Although driving traffic directly to a website can work, there are risks involved. If the Marketer is using Pay-Per-Click advertising, what would happen if the bid prices are driven up from competitors, to the point where the campaigns are no longer profitable? Then the model wouldn’t work anymore.
Or what would happen if the merchants withdraw the offer? That would mean the end of your Internet business.
If you have your own list, you have more control over the direction of your business. If PPC bid prices rise, you can try selling more products or raise the prices of the products you sell. And yes, you can sell your own products if you want to. Without a list, you can’t do that.
If the merchants withdraw the offer, you can look for other offers to sell to the same people. And that’s only possible if you have a list. So do you now see why I strongly recommend building a list (as early as you can)?
No, it’s not a must to build a list. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. But let me remind you that it’s in your best interest to build a list. I’m merely stating a couple of possibilities here for you to choose. And I certainly hope, you choose wisely. Build a list early, and enjoy the long term profits.
