Melbourne is a place of culture, art and great food, a laid-back city at the bottom of Australia with a more European feel than the bold and brash Brisbane and Sydney. Exploring the city turns up a wealth of art galleries, restaurants, great shops, Victorian architecture. Not as hot as elsewhere in the country, Melbourne has warm summers and cool winters- but the weather can be very changeable within any given day or week!

Melbourne was settled by Europeans when some who were living in Tasmania purchased land from the aboriginal tribes in the area. The gold rush in Victoria in 1851 led to a boom in the growth of the city, and at one point Melbourne was the richest city in the world, and the largest after London. A depression in 1891 meant that growth slowed, but it picked up rapidly after World War II and Melbourne is now a popular spot to visit or move to, and a multicultural city.

Exploring the central part of Melbourne is possible on foot. The Flinders Street Railway Station is a major landmark, and there is much more to see- the Queen Victoria Market, the South gate promenade by the river, the new Docklands precinct full of great shops and eateries, meeting place Federation Square, the Immigration and Police museums, and the Eureka Tower.

There is a lot of parkland in Melbourne. Just to the East of the CBD, greenery covers much of both sides of the river and comprises Melbourne Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Birrarung Marr Park, the Shrine of Remembrance, Yarra Park and Olympic Park. A day could easily be spent here visiting, picnicking and just enjoying the greenery and the riverbanks! The Melbourne Museum is set in the pretty Carlton Gardens, and behind St. Kilda you will find Albert Park with its lake, stadium and driving range.

The neighbourhood of St. Kilda is the place to go for some seaside fun whilst in Melbourne. The foreshore is a promenade where all types of people walk, bike and skate under the palm trees. On Sundays there is an arts and crafts market, you can see little penguins at the Breakwater and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to sit and watch the ocean and the people passing by. Luna Park is also in St. Kilda, Melbourne’s amusement park which is located right next to St. Kilda beach.

For shopping in Melbourne, Prahran is the place to go, full of designer fashion boutiques. Outlet stores are popular in Melbourne, and outlet shopping can be found in several locations. Brand Smart is a major outlet mall in Nunawading, and Bridge Road in Richmond is full of them- but the biggest collection of outlets in the city is at DFO (Direct Factory Outlets) in Cheltenham.
