If you’re new to Perth you may not know your way around, or know where the best suburbs to live can be found. One real estate website Domain has a feature called Local Voices which allows people to rate suburbs based on a variety of different features, such as schools, recreation options and nightlife. Each suburb is given a score out of 100 based on each reviewer’s opinion. The survey is on-going, meaning improvements, or declines, can be taken into account as areas change.
Areas such as the Swan Valley, with communities such as Vale Aveley, and suburbs close to the ocean have traditionally done well in similar surveys. Here are the top rated suburbs in Perth according to the Local Voices poll.
Melville
Currently top, with a score of 96.68, is Melville. Found 12km south of the central business district, Melville is a handy place for commuters. Because of this, the area has strong public transport links and also rates well for internet access (thanks to a Telstra Exchange in the suburb) and medical facilities. Although it doesn’t fall down on many options, it does lose points for its lack of nightlife and a high cost of living.
Booragoon
For those who have to commute to Perth CBD, the southern suburbs look the place to be. In second place is Booragoon, with a score of 95.64. Less than four kilometres to the east of Melville, Booragoon is another nearby spot for those who want to work in the city centre. Like Melville, it too loses points for its nightlife and cost of living, as well as eating out options.
Duncraig
Duncraig, just 0.10 behind Booragoon, is Perth’s third, and northern Perth’s top suburb. The area is popular with families and young professionals, although again the nightlife is the major failing point. Duncraig scores well for its schools, its safety and the spirit of the neighbourhood.
West Perth
If you’re wondering where to go for Perth’s nightlife, the western end of the inner city is the place to be. West Perth ranks 51st overall for suburbs, but comes out top for nightlife. A lack of parking, coupled with an abundance of traffic, pull down the score, as does the high level of noise.
Subiaco
If you want a good mix of living conditions and night life, head to Subiaco. The next suburb along from West Perth, Subiaco has the second best night life and is ranked 12th overall. Transport to the city is regular and with the Subiaco Oval, sports fans and music fans get to see the biggest and best Perth has to offer.
What you look for in a suburb is a personal matter and getting the right balance can be a tricky thing. Getting to know an area before you move in, even if it’s just visiting it a few times, can help you see more than an internet review can show.
