Internet Marketing Step 1: Keywords
For each piece of content that you want to rank, decide what keyword you want it ranked for. Internet Marketing is all about keywords. If you don’t know what keywords you want to rank for, you won’t have a well-defined goal to work towards. Be sure that the keyword for each page is in the title and content of the page. I recommend putting the keyword once in the very first sentence on the page. That will help Googlebot quickly know what the content is about. If it’s not awkward to do so, you may want to bold the keyword once in the content to highlight it for the Googlebot.
Internet Marketing Step 2: Backlinks
Backlinks are links on other sites around the web (and other pages for your own site) that point to the page you are trying to rank. Google uses these to gauge the importance of the site being ranked. The real work of internet marketing is getting these backlinks from high quality sites. The key to backlinks is that you want your keyword to be the anchor text of the backlink. For those who don’t know about anchor text, it is the words that you actually click on when following the link.
On your site, be sure to have a list of your informational pages that you are trying to rank in the sidebar, so that every page of your site contains a link to these pages. On other sites, there are lots of ways to get backlinks. One common one that you see regularly is commenting on other people’s blogs. Most comments allow you to include a link with the comment. Another common way is to post content on sites like Ezine Articles or YouTube and include your link with them.
These two steps build the backbone of any good internet marketing campaign. If you are in a more competitive niche, it will take some more intensive marketing, but these two steps will get you started.
