What is Affiliate Marketing? In a nutshell…you sell other people’s products, whether it’s digital or physical.

Where do you find the products? Aside from the major sites like Clickbank, Amazon, Linkshare, Commission Junction…you can do a Google search on most any word or phrase and you are likely to come up with a site that is selling a product related to it. Hit the link, research the product, if it’s up to snuff, find their “Affiliates” link and sign up.

How do you sell your Affiliate Product? That’s kinda like answering the question ‘How many stars are in the sky’. But I’ll share what I do.

I use places like Dragonsurf, TrafficSplash, My personal blogs and websites, Forum signatures, PPC when appropriate, Article Directories, Email my List (don’t have a list to email to?) that’s okay for now. Use places like ListBandit. I also use LinktoBlogs, Twitter, Orkut, MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, Facebook, MySpace…. I think you get the picture. Most any decent place that I can sign up for free and do a little networking, I try to use. Every so often I will take the “upgraded package” if it means I can send more emails, or post more links, etc.

Is it easy? It’s not a walk in the park, but it’s not rocket science either, if you follow the right people.

My recommendations? Someone who is upfront about their business and doesn’t mind showing their personal side. They have to have taken the time to learn about their niche and can ‘walk the walk’ not just spout out a bunch of rehashed garbage.

Check out their blogs, watch their videos, see what other people are saying about their products on forums and blogs. Feel like you’re spying or investigating them? Sure you are! That’s what “researching a product” is all about. It’s not just about the product you are selling. You are ‘endorsing’ another marketer, attaching your good name to theirs.

If you’re going to invest yourself, your time and your money with them, you need to be sure they are top-notch in the industry. Buy their product. I don’t like to sell a product unless I’ve looked at it. If I’m going to recommend it to you, it better be something I would use, or do use. Their is no faster way to trash your name than to sell every piece of garbage out their just because you can get an affiliate link to it.

Follow what the gurus do and imitate it. Seriously. I’m not talking about stalking anyone and doing everything they do piece by piece. But all good the ones have their networks in place and know how to network.

I have a few people that I consider my mentors even if they don’t know it. I look at the design of their websites, I check out how they are marketing themselves. I buy their products and learn from them. I sign up to their newsletters and look at how they interact with their mailing list. They are obviously doing something right, so I will take my cues from them.

A lot of information I read says “you don’t need your own website”. BaHumBug. Yes you do, even if it’s in the form of a Blog to begin with. If you want to make a name for yourself and create a real business online (and not be a one-hit-wonder), then you need to establish a presence online. Grab your name from someone like GoDaddy and find a reputable hosting company. You don’t need to spend big bucks, I’m talking twenty dollars a month to have your own site.

Does it take time?

Yes, and lots of it, especially when you are first getting started. There will be a time when things are more automated for you, but the face of Internet Marketing changes every other weekend. You must keep up with the changes or you will be lost in the crowd so you will always be knee-deep in your business. But if it’s something you enjoy doing, then it’s not all that much work.

Most important? Get started now. ‘just do it’ Stay focused on what you are doing, be patient, make mistakes and learn from them. That’s some good advice, read it again. Don’t stop trying even if you screw up. Learn what didn’t work, change it, do it again, over and over and over.
