Since 1949, leaders of the commonwealth countries meet after every two years to discuss issues concerning commonwealth countries as well as the entire world. Their aim is to give direction to future policies and initiatives in an integrated manner. These biennial meetings provide a platform for investment and trade opportunities, shape policies and share cultural values. And in 2011, the grand experience is coming to Perth, Australia!
Western Australian city, Perth will host the 2011 CHOGM from 28th to 30th October 2011. The CHOGM theme this year is “Building Global Resilience, Building National Resilience”. However, there’s more to CHOGM besides serious business. It is the extravaganza that this event brings. Numerous parallel events/festivals are organized by various groups. Visitors, attendees, delegates, and Perth residents will have a chance to enjoy myriad activities in the month of October 2011. Some of these are:
The Commonwealth Festival
It is the prime event as far as common public is concerned. This eight day festival focuses on arts and culture, international and local music and of course food. The place offers a lot of exciting family activities to the people of Perth and foreign visitors.
Commonwealth Business Forum
It will be held from October 25-27 at the Burswood Entertainment Complex. It will focus on business, trade and entrepreneurial issues.
Commonwealth Youth Forum
From October 23-27, The Esplanade Hotel (Fremantle) will be host to Commonwealth Youth Forum. Highly recommended to anyone interested in interacting with global audience and concerned with current youth issues.
Commonwealth People’s Forum
The Parmelia Hilton (Perth CBD) will play host to this event. This event will focus on commonwealth country’s issues related to development and human rights.
Sporting Events
A curtain-raiser netball match will be played featuring South African SPAR Proteas and the Malawi Queens. On October 23rd, the Holden Netball Test Series for the Constellation Cup match will be played between New Zealand Silver Ferns and The Australian Diamonds. And where’s the venue? The legendary Burswood Dome.
From October 20-23, the Perth Hockey Stadium will host a new tournament called the International Super Series. The star attraction will be Australian teams (both men’s and women’s) called Hockeyroos and Kookaburras.
Western Australian Highlights
The visitors will consist of a global audience. They can expect a lot from Western Australia in terms of sheer tourism and hospitality. The natural wonders of this region dates back 40,000 years! Perth offers a lot of experiences including museums, cafes, restaurants, shopping, galleries and theatres. Retail therapy is known to best in Perth! The city’s pride, King’s Park, will be thoroughly updated before CHOGM. A total of $9 million is being spent on the renovation that includes a brand new meeting building, a floral clock and open seating area close to Botanical Garden.
Not to forget the beaches in Perth! Tourists are treated to quiet as well as bustling beach atmosphere that includes alfresco dining, private retreats and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Beaches near Lancelin and Mandurah are a must visit to experience natural beauty at its finest. You can even swim with the sharks!
