When you start advertising affiliate marketing programs on Google AdWords and MSN, you will probably find that you have to bid quite high for your ads. You need to know how much you can afford to bid, and bid no more. So let’s start with how much you can afford to spend.

As a rule, you should get two sales for each 100 clicks on a good advert with a good product that is in demand. This is a ballpark figure to use when you start off – it is not guaranteed, but is typical.

Work out what you can afford to pay

Let us assume that you get paid $25 for each sales, which is what you should aim for with digital download products. If you get two sales you will earn $50, which means the maximum amount you can afford to spend on each click on the ads is $50 divided by 100 = $0.50.

If you grab a big list of keywords, you will probably find that the bids for many are high. For example, the bid for something competitive like ‘dog food’ will be high, and AdWords will not accept your low bid. It will tell you that the keyword is pending until you raise the bid. You might have to raise it to $1.00, which would mean making a loss.

Your ad is not considered relevant

Why is this? Because Google has decided that your advert is not relevant to the keyword, and also that your landing page is not relevant. The answer is not that difficult: it is to make sure that the ad copy and keyword are relevant to each other, and that the landing page has that keyword quite often on the page. Ideally, there will be one page for each keyword, or each few keywords.

To do this, you will need to reduce the number of keywords you bid on. This is not a bad thing because your ads and keywords will naturally have more relevance to each other, and you will get more clicks. It is a bad idea to have a list of, say, 500 keywords, for this reason.

Set up campaign groups

The other thing you should do is to divide the keywords into different campaigns. If you were advertising dog food, you could have one Ad Group for dry dog food, one for tinned dog food, and another for homemade dog food and so on. This way you can make sure that each ad is relevant to each keyword. It is also a good idea to have one word from your advert in every key phrase in a group.

If you follow this strategy for advertising affiliate marketing programs, you will reduce the cost of each Ad. It is also a good idea to have one landing page for each ad group, so you maintain the relevance there.

Finally, to cut the cost do not bid high enough for the top spot. The top advertiser gets a lot of impulse clicks, which click away when they see this is an ad, and the second ad gets quite a few too. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get sales!

If you go for the third or fourth spot, you will get better quality traffic and quite a lot of clicks.
