Foreign Institute Investors (FIIs) who pumped over $28 billions of money in Indian stock market in 2010, have been selling to a tune of net sellers of equities worth Rs 2500 Crores in the first few days of this year 2011. Even much before the year ended, FIIs have been selling stocks in Indian market.
Indian stock market has been rising in the past year 2010 before peaking out in November (Diwali) last year on the back of FIIs inflows while chasing stocks in India.
On the other hand Indian Institutes and Mutual Funds MFs have been selling stocks on redemption pressure and have been net sellers of equities worth Rs 3875 crores in the last quarter.
Retail Investors holding have only increased by a marginal change of 3 BPS.
The trend reversal in FIIs inflows is caused by concerns over high inflation, poor industrial numbers, uncertainty over the ability of the government over policy making in the Budget session, disappointment over Infosys’ results, high crude oil prices, petrol price hike and fears over a possible interest rate hike have spooked the market sentiment and Investor preferred taking some profits and going on the side line.
U.S Stocks Posted Gains 7th Week In A Row
While Indian stocks are battered, the global scenario looks much more rosy and stable. U.S (NYSE) stocks have closed on a higher note 7th week in a row. UK and Europe also looks quite stable.
This shows that what investors hate the most is uncertainty, as no one is willing to take the extra risk. FIIs and Mutual Funds will again return as buyer when the prices are tempting enough for which markets needs to go through some more pain likely.
What could cause more Sell Off In Indian Share Market?
Global news flow is positive to neutral these days. But we face our own internal issues, now above all the issues in our hand, if something follows from the global front, then its gonna be a problem for our market to digest the same.
Another event to watch out is RBI Policy meet later this month. Share Market has already started discounting 25 BPS hike, but I think the RBI might take some stern measures to cool off Inflation and that will not be good for the Corporate’s and Industries.
During such tough times, when its a Catch 22 kind of situation for Indian Government, a little bit of negative guidance or statement from the Economy Minister or Finance Ministry Panel could cause a lot of selling pressure in stock market.
Watch IIP no.s India is the second fastest growing economy in the world which is currently said to be facing a blip. How much impact this blip can cause is anybody’s guess for now, since without the figures supporting it shall be little hard to maintain the valuation and prices.
