With this article I’d like to share my thoughts about Affiliate Marketing. Firstly, why do so many people want to get into Affiliate Marketing? From my research, as well as my own personal perspective, there are a number of good reasons.

1) You can be your own Boss. No one hovering over your shoulder, monitoring everything you do, deciding when and if you get a raise.

2) No office politics to worry about. I really like that!

3) You make your own hours. Not a morning person? Fine, work in the evening. Need a vacation? Go when you like. Need a day off? Just take it.

4) You’ll never be fired.

5) No income limit. It’s an opportunity to make more money working fewer hours.

6) You can work from home. If you are a stay at home parent, retired or unemployed, it’s a great way to keep the money coming in.

7) The excitement when you discover a hot new product to promote or, my personal favourite, Affiliate Training or information that can boost you to the next level. What I enjoy most is the freedom. I’m not tied down to the usual 9 to 5. If I need to be out for a morning, or even a day, I can put in enough time later on to compensate. That, and I love the writing. Who Knew? Then there’s the money. I make more now than I did when I was working a regular job.

On the downside of things, the new Affiliate Marketer faces some challenges, not the least of which is finding and absorbing all the necessary information, but I’ll come back to that later. Here are a few other occupational hazards to watch out for.

1) Learning to work alone. It takes self discipline to face you computer every day and be productive. Plus, it can be a bit lonely at times. My cure for the loneliness is to pick up the phone and make a quick call to an Affiliate Marketing friend, just to hear another voice, bounce off some ideas, or just for the reassurance that I’m not the only one dealing with this.

2) Staying focused. That means leaving things like Facebook and personal email until the end of the day, when all your job-related tasks are finished. It’s so tempting to just take a peek at Facebook to see what’s new, but that little peek often ends up wasting a lot more time than you anticipated.

3) Not working too much or for too long at a stretch. This is a big one. I know, the idea is to work less and make more and that concept does work, but the tendency to lose track of time, write one more article, read one more article or try to process some new information you’ve discovered can be surprisingly common among online marketers. Like anyone else, you need regular breaks and a little exercise doesn’t hurt, either. Helps clear the over-loaded, info-saturated affiliate mind.

4) Finding the right information. Particularly if you’re new to Affiliate Marketing, finding all the information and training you’ll need to really make a go of it and then putting it all into place successfully can be very daunting. So many “training packages” give you information that is too high tech to begin with. The authors of ebooks and videos can sometimes forget that their audience may have very few computer skills or knowledge of the “online lingo”. Even the most comprehensive trainings can leave out crucial pieces of the puzzle. As a new marketer, it is vital that you keep learning. Not only is there a lot of information out there, but it keeps changing, and so does the game itself.

5) Attrition. It really is a shame that with all the great online opportunities available and more coming up every day, that so many who get started in Online Marketing end up quitting. Promises of thousands of dollars a week, making money right away and making easy money are all smoke and mirrors. When it doesn’t happen and they can’t figure out why, the Affiliate gets discouraged and gives up.

Perseverance is key, here. Sometimes, just when ready to admit defeat and failure, you discover something that gives you encouragement. It could be a few tips on SEO or an eBook about using email lists or some other aspect of online marketing you didn’t know about or were struggling with. The point is, keep looking, keep learning. I find that one search leads to another and another, until you suddenly stumble upon your missing puzzle piece.

For me, the biggest hurdle was finding all the pieces to the puzzle, all the fragments of information required to really get the traffic and conversions, in term that I, the non-techie, could understand. There are so many seemingly little details that can actually have a huge effect on the success of your marketing and when you find them, or even just some of them, you can get so excited!
