Before we get in the discussion on stock market let us first describe what a stock is? A stock is a portion of ownership of the company. By owning stock of a company you become a share holder of the company who has a specific right over the profit of the company and earn voting rights in annual general meeting of the share holders to decide about the management of the company. By issuing shares companies raise capital from the market that they can use to expand their business. New businesses also can issue shares that are called IPO or Initial Public Offering for raising fund for start of the business. For issuing shares a company needs to get listed at a market and there are certain criteria that they need to fulfill to get listed at the stock market.
What are functions of market – The primary function of the market is to provide a common platform for the companies and traders. Companies can issue shares to raise money through market. Traders whether buyers and sellers can trade in those stocks at the stock market at an agreed price. This is of course the basic function of the stock market and there are other functions as well that are undertaken by the stock market. The stock market also provide information for the traders, companies, brokers and analysts about the rise and fall of the prices, trading volume and so many other factors that control the ups and down of the stock market.
How price rise and fall at stock market – Bid price is the price at which a buyer is willing to buy the stocks. That means if you are selling that stock you will get that price for your stock when you sell at the market. On the other hand an ask price is the price at which a seller is ready to sell his stock. That means as a buyer you have to pay that price to buy the stock. The difference between the bid price and the ask price is called the spread. The larger is the spread the more active at the market. It is generally considered that the demand is the determining factor for the price of the stock. When the demand for a particular stock is high the price of that stock is on the rise. Greater demand for stock means that there are more buyers in the market than the number of sellers in the market. But when there is more seller than buyer for stocks at the stock market, that is when the demand for a stock is falling then the price of that stock also falls at the market. Of course there are so many factors that are crucial for the rise and fall in demand for a particular stock.
Factors that control price – As we have already mentioned there are so many factors that control the price of the stocks at the market. Primarily it is the performance of the company in the recent time and the future of the company in the present context that has the direct influence on the demand and subsequently on the price of the stock. Apart from that prevailing trend of the market, trend of the sector to which belong also control the price of a stock.
