If you’ve been wooed by the sweet siren song of the Email Marketer, then listen up: Their success is not what it seems. They lure you in with claims that they make hundreds, thousands, or even millions of dollars by sending out email… People like that are sketchy at best.
My investigation and experiences over the past two years have proven that they’re only telling you half the story… Email marketers do profit by sending out emails, that part is true – but what they may have neglected to tell you is that you can’t just send emails to anyone – you have to build a list. Those who send emails to anyone they want are called spammers, and there’s a cozy jail cell waiting for them once they get caught.
Now, here’s the big secret: Skilled internet business owners are also usually skilled list builders. They spend time and money getting people to sign up for their lists, then comes the profitable step of sending the emails. And it makes sense – if you could make – say – $1.00 (to be conservative) by sending an email out to 100 people, then couldn’t you make $10.00 if you had a list of 1,000? And if you were a really badass email marketer and your list topped 100,000, then wouldn’t each email you send be worth $1000?
Becoming successful brings a scalable aspect to your business model – the more email addresses on your list (that actually signed up and want to be there) the more you can make. And I can tell you from my investigations that many top internet marketers make a lot more than $1000 for an email.
I’ve been working on the inside at Overcome Everything for two years now – we’re a digital publishing company that does a LOT of testing. Our president, Tellman Knudson is a skilled internet marketer, and I’ve seen an email that went out to 200,000 people pull in over $36,000 in mere hours. (In fact, I happened to write that email!)
But if we’d just sent it out to the contacts in our address books, or to a list we bought, rented or stole we’d get brought up on SPAM charges and thrown in jail. All the people on our list have signed up to get our emails, and more importantly, if they ever want to get off the list they can unsubscribe with one click.
Internet marketers make their riches by attracting an audience of people who want to get their emails, and then they send them offers for products or services that the list already wants and needs. Becoming an internet marketer can be incredibly lucrative – especially because once you’ve built your list, you can make real money just by sending out an email in the morning. But, the “siren song” some email marketers sing about free money just by sending email isn’t the whole story. A fair amount of work goes into becoming successful – there are important steps to take, and a few crucial skills to master along the way.
