Creating a business plan and having a specific marketing strategy is the foundation of building a thriving and profitable business, but how many of you are reading this article right now and wondering, “What’s that? What is a marketing strategy?”

You feel out of your depth when it comes to planning your business and really don’t know where to start with creating your marketing strategy. You maybe fiddle around on Facebook or write a couple of articles, but you really don’t have a concrete and specific marketing strategy in place. And consequently your business isn’t growing, you’re not connecting with new subscribers every day, and the profits just aren’t there.

So, if this is you, let me guide you today in creating your basic (read: foundational) marketing strategy. And it really doesn’t have to be complicated. Keep it as simple as possible but also have a firm plan in place. There are just two areas of your marketing strategy that you need to focus on:

1. When a Client Meets You for the First Time

When a potential clients “sees” you for the first time, what is the path you want them to follow? Is this clear to you?

You obviously want them on your newsletter list, but where do they go from there? Do you have an automated follow-up sequence in place that shares some of your most valuable content with them, and then offers them an up-sell into your first level product? After they’ve invested in your first-level product, what’s the next step for them?? And the one after that??

Take a piece of paper and plan all this out (hint: it’s your product funnel) and be really clear on the next steps that you want your clients to take, from the free initial contact right through to your top-end offering.

2. The Marketing Strategies (Both Online and Offline) That You’re Going to Use

The other side of the coin is what are the marketing strategies you’re using to draw potential clients to you in the first place? Is it a combination of online/ offline strategies? How do all the strategies fit together? Are you leveraging your content across many different media? How much of this is automated, i.e. is your blog linked to your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn accounts? Are you submitting your articles to article directories?

This is what’s known as creating your online marketing flow so that every piece of your marketing flows together in an automated and streamlined way. And when your marketing flow is set up right you will find that new subscribers are drawn to you daily… with very little input from you.

Pull together steps 1 and 2 above to create your own marketing strategy; that way you always know what you need to do next. You’re not constantly second-guessing yourself, and you are in charge of your business.

So, take out two sheets of paper right now, and create your own easy-to-implement marketing strategy using the above two steps to guide you.
