Finding untapped profitable niche markets is a fancy term for finding customers who want to buy something that you haven’t thought about. That is the basis of all sales, isn’t it?

A market is people looking for a new TV.

A niche market is people looking for a new HD, LCD TV.

A micro niche market is people looking for a 42″ 3-D, HD, LCD TV with surround sound.

See what I’m getting at? Narrowing down the market.

Of course when you do that, there are fewer customers. At the same time, there is less competition out there as well. So it’s a trade off – but working niche markets can definitely work in your favor. Why? Because if you have exactly what a customer is searching for, whether it is in a store or on the Internet, you have a much better chance of converting that prospect into a customer.

So how do you find those niche markets and what kind of niche markets are there? Start with a market – any market. Within every market there are a number of niche markets – just like the TV sales example above.

Let’s say you want to target the Make Money Online market which, by the way, is huge! Guess how many people are also targeting the same overworked, dog tired market? If you use those three words as your main keywords and people are searching for the same three words, they’ll get at least a Kazillion hits! Once you are past the first few in a Google search, people will never find you.

So what do you have to do? You have to look for niche markets within that market and refine the keywords you use in your metatags. A very good strategy is to use long tail words. Huh? What are long tail words? Instead of one or two keywords, use a sentence with three, four or more words that people could be searching for. Consider the guy above, searching for a ’42” 3-D, HD, LCD TV with surround sound”. He knows exactly what he wants!

Similarly, let’s say you are selling an e-book, whether it is yours or you are an affiliate selling someone else’s work. Do you think you will make more sales if you are trying to attract people who want to “make money online” or people who want to “work at home and make money online with low upfront costs”.

People get tired of wading through the Internet swamp of thousands of offers to help them make money online. If your offer hones in specifically on what someone is seeking, you have a much better chance of converting them to a paying customer. And…it is a well-tested marketing fact that once you have a customer, it is far less expensive and time consuming to sell something else to that same customer than it is to find a new one. They already know you and bought a product from you, which presumably they are happy with, so they are predisposed to trust you when you offer them another opportunity to purchase.

Whatever market you are trying to crack, look at the keywords you are using. Can you convert them into long tail words? What specifically are your potential customers looking for? Look for specific phrases in the marketing literature for the product you are selling. Once you get the hang of creating these longer keywords or more correctly stated ‘key phrases’, you may be surprised at how easily it is to spot the ones that will attract buyers. Of course, you still have to test and perhaps adjust your keywords but you should find a relatively higher conversion rate.
