Internet Marketing is a term that until recently was fairly unheard of and only a few people would have described themselves as Internet Marketers. It is however becoming more and more common for people to earn their living working purely online and every business that wants to stay ahead of the game and continue to be competitive, must have an online presence.
What Is Internet Marketing?
Internet Marketing actually covers a number of things that you can do online, to earn money. Some people do just one of them and others may do a variety. Here is a list and explanation of some of the most common activities which might fall under this banner:
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate Marketing consists of you sending traffic to someone else’s website for a commission. This can be based on the amount bought by the people who you send, or can be a set amount paid per click or per download. This can actually be done at zero cost to you, as you don’t need a website or a product to sell of your own!
Direct Sales
As the name suggests, this is where you sell a product to someone else via the Internet. This can be a product that you have created, or one created by someone else, but to which you have PLR (Public Label Rights). Again, this can be done without a website of your own, or you may have a site which promotes products in a particular area.
High Ticket Sales
As part of an online business you may decide to sell a high ticket product. This is a product of high value, which you sell to other people for a significant investment. This could for example be a business system type product like Your Netbiz, or a holiday club like Primo Vacations. In this system you would receive a proportion of the money invested, by the people who join your team.
Multi Level Marketing or MLM
This is a business system whereby people pay to become part of your business, selling the same system or products that you do and creating a team of their own. The people below you in the chain are often referred to as your downline. You receive a proportion of all the money paid in to the business by your downline. The idea is to create a huge network below you, in order to receive the biggest profit.
Joint Ventures or JV’s
As the name would suggest, this is where you partner up with someone else to promote a particular product or system. This can work in 2 ways. If you have a product but no customers to sell it to, you might team up with someone who has a large customer base or list. Conversely, if you have a large list of customers, but no product to sell, you could team up with someone who has a product to sell which you think will appeal to your market. In both cases you would split the proceeds from the sales. This is very similar to affiliate marketing, except that affiliate sales tend to be offers available to many sellers and are often done anonymously, or without any obvious link to your core business. A JV on the other had will be much more of a personal recommendation on your part, to your subscribers.
Residual Sales
Many of the tools that you need to market online require a monthly subscription to use them. Once you have purchased the product, you can often become an affiliate seller for it. In this case you would receive an ongoing monthly commission for any accounts bought through you.
As you can see, there are a number of different ways that you can make money online, which fall under the internet marketing umbrella. Some of them require that you have a website or a product, whilst others do not.
