If you set up a list first with any kind of product that people need, you will be setting yourself up to succeed in both the short-term and the long-term. There isn’t one successful online marketer that won’t tell you to build that list. We need those subscribers to sell our virtual products to, just as you would need to “stock shelves” as you would in a store. Whatever we are selling or offering must be high quality to keep our subscribers. These days, they can “switch you off” in one click by unsubscribing.

Your offer, product or report needs to be strong in value, and if you UNDER promise and OVER deliver, you have a winner. People will simply keep coming back for more and stick around. I’ve seen an internet marketer who keeps on doing just that and he has over 37,000 subscribers just to one of his forums because he just keeps over delivering in his training and products. He has hundreds of websites, some e-commerce and some affiliate, he never puts his eggs all in one basket, he diversified in which part of his income (a large part) is derived through AdSense and he has disclosed that his turnover has exceeded $10,000,000. He will tell you that you need to build a list first.

You will need an autoresponder, and a website would be desirable but not necessary. It does make it easier but it can be done with just some very well placed joint ventures with other marketers offering links to your product or report, the joint venture partner sends his subscribers to your “opt in” or blog, you have an opt in ready to go through your autoresponder and right there, you start building your list. It doesn’t really matter where or what you begin with, you just need to know how to.

Spend a little time doing some research for the right report or product, it does help if it’s something close to home, it makes the process easier and quicker to develop, but if there isn’t anything you can think of, hunt it down. A GREAT way to start is to write down 20 ideas. Keyword research 10 ideas and choose the best 3. Rinse and repeat with the other 10. Now you have just 6 ideas. Keyword researching with Google’s External Keyword Tool will show you keywords searched for the most and their value and if you are really paying attention, you may just find a niche market, where the daily searches is reasonable for the keyword/s. At least 500 searches a day is good for a strong market (about 15,000 per month) and 300 per day indicates a possible niche market. Google has explanatory video’s to help you with understanding keywords and how they work and it will pay you to spend some time watching them. With the final 6 ideas though, check them with a research tool like Market Samurai for the best results and choose the best 3. Start with building around the strongest choice out of those 3.

Keyword researching will just give you either some support for your ideas or no support at all so you know if you are wasting your time. Once you have pinned down what you are going to sell & have set up your site, then you look for or create the free offers in support of that product to entice people into subscribing, thus your list being created. That’s when you can start to get really creative with your product and bonuses to sell, once you have started building your list. Some may question why we would do keyword research for list building. The answer to that is simple: it will either help you identify a target market you didn’t realise was even existent or it will give you other ideas to ADD to your original idea, and the BONUS is that you will know that people are looking for it on the internet and approximately how many.

As for websites, Blogspot and WordPress are great places to start, as I did, to get the feel for everything working together and gave me great insight about what I needed to know, and doing that eliminates any fear you might have in moving forward with new things every day at a consistent pace and rate of achievement. It will all work together to build your confidence as you go along. The important thing is to keep doing something.

As good as it is to know what to do and how to do it, it’s really important too, to get your mind around the more advanced techniques of doing things as well. I have learned so much, am still learning, and still have so much more to learn and I’m loving it. The most important mindset you can have is to treat it as a daily job, work set hours, sum up what you have achieved at the end of each day, reflect on errors made and move on to the next step the next day. List Building is only the beginning of that journey and I hope that I can help you kick that off.

So, once you have chosen your keyword, bought a domain name and hosting or set up a blog, pulling your product together and then learning how to drive traffic to your site will bring it all together to start building an email marketing list. On the other hand, as I said, you don’t necessarily need to set up a site either. It may take some time to do if it is your first, be patient with yourself and your learning journey and remember, once you’ve learned it, you will just keep getting better and quicker at it. Lists will be built for each individual product or service that you provide, unless you are recommending to your subscribers something that you know they might like, want or need elsewhere. That’s where Joint Ventures come in again, except this time, YOU are on the payment receiving end.
