One of the biggest challenges for any entrepreneur has to be figuring out how to go about marketing their product or service for their home based business.

There are a fair number of marketing methods to choose from. It can be tough to figure out if you should focus on paid marketing or some form of free marketing.

As an Internet Marketing Business Coach, one of the first things I do in every initial training session is to assign the first four steps for building a solid foundation for any home business.

Step one is to figure out your Personal Branding. This means determining who you are and how you want to portray yourself online. Depending on the business you are in may lead to subtle or even distinct differences for how you go about this.

A great book to read is “Positioning: The Battle For Your Mind” by Al Ries and Jack Trout. Read this book, take notes and do the work. The more prepared your Personal Branding strategy, the better the results you will get with your marketing.

Step two is to determine your target audience. A great way to begin this process is to reflect on what your own mindset was when you found your home business opportunity.

What were you thinking, what were you looking for? What were your goals (remember, this is NOT about money. Money is the vehicle for you to get what you really want)?

What was it that caught your attention? Why did you go into the business you’re in? Was it simply the business itself? The products? Did you speak with a real person? Is there a community? What about integrity?

A simple and effective tool to research and find answers to anything is the internet via Google, Yahoo, YouTube or other major search engines. Enter “How to determine your target audience” and find some solid information. There is a lot of worthless fluff out there, so pay attention and make sure what you’re seeing makes sense.

Do your homework, research and figure out who it is you’re looking for. Once you’ve done this, remember from this point forward you are sifting and sorting, looking for people who know what they want, have real desire and commitment. (You are NOT looking for whiners, complainers or energy sucking vampires).

Now research where to find your target audience or you’ll waste a lot of time and/or money!

The third step is to put together your business plan. This will cover your mission, vision and goals. You’ll want to have a road map to guide you to your destination.

Covering your values will be at the core of how you will conduct yourself and your business. Integrity is a must. Make sure you are doing what you are into for the right reasons, including really wanting to help people.

You can use the internet to find empowering business plan training and formats. You’ll need to move onto step four and then come back to step three to finish your business plan.

The fourth step is to figure out which marketing methods you will utilize. I recommend you absolutely begin by writing down how you envision yourself. Include the good, the bad and the ugly.

Now write down a list of your strengths and a separate list of your weaknesses. Narrow the list of strengths down to your top five.

Next ask the two people you are closest to, who know you the best, to write down a list of what they see as your strengths and to be as all inclusive as possible. Ask them to narrow their list down to the top five strengths as well.

Compare the three lists of your strengths. The lists from your family or friends will be more objective and therefore more realistic. You might find yourself laughing or thinking they are crazy, but have enough awareness to recognize they are probably right!

Check the specific strengths you have down that match from the three lists. Make note of the different strengths you had either not thought of or did not realize were strengths you had.

Write down a list of all the marketing methods you are aware of. Again, use the internet if you need to. Just enter “Top 25 internet marketing methods” or whatever specific list you are looking for.

To select your marketing methods, choose two (no more) that match up with your strengths. These two methods should be things that you enjoy and feel a passion for. This will help empower your marketing so you get RESULTS! (After all, this is what marketing is all about in the end, results!).
