Ladies and Gentleman, the tide has turned and we are officially in a brand new era of brand marketing. This shift has been going on for a while but now. The recent advent of social media has solidified its arrival.

Back in the old days, marketing was largely a one-way street. If a brand wanted to advertise a product, they would hire a marketing firm to engage in a form of “push” marketing. Mediums like television, magazine ads, radio spots, etc, are all examples of push marketing.

In push marketing the audience has no say in how the message is crafted or delivered. They just receive the message and are expected to react. If done well, it can lead to a sale or a positive brand impression.

Now that social media is here, the tide has turned. Now the people have the power to interact with one another and with brands directly. The brand may be able to craft the message but the people can act and react to voice how they feel about it.

Brands that don’t pay attention to social media are learning the hard way in the form of bad press, negative word of mouth, and loss of customers. Ask Domino’s and Motrin. Social media is a force to be reckoned with.

Smart companies are learning to LISTEN first before jumping in with a marketing message. There are a number of tools available online to help make listening possible. After the companies hear what is being said, they can then engage with their customer directly.

Think about it. Which is more impactful? An impersonal marketing message aimed at the masses? Or a personal message or answer to a pressing question delivered straight from a brand. This is what is what social media allows companies to do now. This is the new face of marketing.

Brands need to learn the new rules of marketing and play by them. The ones that do will thrive. The ones that don’t will slowly see their market share disappear.
