Marketing on Facebook is not as complicated as we all seem to make it. Facebook has to be one of the most powerful platforms to brand a business and market from that is out there today. Many people will try to tell you Facebook is dead, but the numbers speak for themselves. With over 750 million people, the site is still alive and kicking. All we have to do as marketers is just figure it out.

Before I get into this subject however, I’d first like to give thanks to all the leaders within MLSP that have taught me what I know. I’m not as experienced as the likes of Michelle Pescosolido, but I’m confident one day with persistence it’s not a stretch to reach that level. Thanks for all your training Michelle!

First thing’s first. As marketers one thing we must all be aware of is avoiding the perception of coming off as “pitchy.” I’m sure you’ve witnessed this on Facebook in full force as thousands of eager prospectors flood the channels spam posting their latest and greatest deal. I remember clearly a recent experience with a young lady pitching her make money fast deal (shut down as a pyramid scheme). And it’s stuff like this that just makes my stomach turn.

I know we’re better than that as an industry, as marketers, and more importantly as people. Mr. Falcone said it best in one of his trainings when he made the comment that “people don’t like it when you poop in their kitchen.” One of the most important things you can do when marketing on Facebook is realize that you’re dealing with REAL people.

So with that in mind here is a short list of things you should never do:

Send unsolicited friend requests to people
Join groups and pitch your deal on how it’s the best thing out there
Send unsolicited friend requests with messages to people
Treat people like a source of money in your marketing endeavors

Did you notice the last one I wrote down? It pretty much summarizes what the other strategies do when they are utilized.

The key to marketing on Facebook is patience ladies and gentleman. Here’s a rough outline of how the strategy works. The best marketers in the industry will utilize the search engine and look for their target market (people only). Once they find someone that looks interesting they will visit their page and find common interests if there are any. The marketer will then send a message from the heart, unique to that individual, asking for permission to continue the conversation (no friend request, it’ll get your account suspended if 5 people respond NO and I DO NOT KNOW THEM). If the recipient agrees a friend request is sent later with mutual consent.

That, my friends, is how a new relationship is formed online using Facebook, in a nutshell. Oh, and the key is doing this consistently 5-10 times per day. Now can you see why patience is key, and why caring about the people you reach out to matters?

So there you have it. Although this is a simplified version of how marketing on Facebook is accomplished today, it all ultimately revolves around building relationships and really engaging with people on a deeper level than just hitting them with your deal. Because honestly, not one person cares about that.
