When you’re doing marketing writing for your business materials, one of the most valuable things you can do is to sharpen your target market. If you’ve been in business for a while, it’s likely that your market has changed, and you haven’t fully reflected that in your marketing materials. This can result in attracting less than optimal clients, or failing to attract enough clients. If your prospects can’t identify with the description of your target market, you won’t get contacts and inquiries from them. Without the lifeblood of new clients, your business goes into survival mode.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself during the process of marketing writing that will help you sharpen your target market description and attract the clients you want.
1) What results do your prospects want to get? What solutions are they searching for? When they read your business materials, think about what would set up a resonance for them. You want them thinking, “This is (or might be) what I’ve been looking for!”
2) What benefits do your successful clients enjoy after they have your solution? What do you hear the most positive comments about? How do these benefits affect your clients’ lives? In what way do you observe that their circumstances have been transformed during the process of working with you?
3) How do you want to upgrade your target market? Do you want to increase the average cost of sales? Are you looking to move into a new segment of the market? Do you want to eliminate or de-emphasize a segment or segments? Look for ways to change your business by changing your target market.
4) When you think about the long-term strategy for your business, does that suggest any changes to your target market? Maybe you want to move away from old technology or address additional aspects of the problem you solve. When you know where you want to end up, you’ll know what to introduce into your target market description.
5) How do you want to distinguish yourself from your competitors? Inevitably, this will be reflected in your target market. Those differences in the way you work, or the results you get necessarily mean that your target market is different. Though these differences may seem subtle, if they aren’t made plain, your target market will not recognize themselves in your description.
6) When you hand out your current business materials, what do you have to explain or apologize about? Use these as hints about information that must be included. These will show you ways your business has evolved and your marketing writing has not caught up. Often these are issues we’re too busy to deal with when we’re doing business every day. We know we need to incorporate this information but we’re too busy making money and surviving. Take the time and make the effort to include any missing information. Be sure that you no longer have to apologize when you hand out your written business materials.
Ask yourself these questions and write down the answers. All this information will be a solid foundation for you to consider when working on developing a new target market description. This should make your marketing writing much easier and more effective.
