From my perspective, affiliate marketing is a fantastic way to earn a living although many people become discouraged and drop out of programs before giving them an opportunity to work. Much of the time, one’s inability to make money through affiliate marketing can be attributed to a few simple but avoidable mistakes.

One of the most common perceptions is that one can generate huge revenues simply by putting up a low-quality website with a few affiliate links and absolutely no original content. It is common knowledge that in order to participate in an affiliate program, it is a must to have a website up and running. However, there is little or no chance of getting traffic (visitors) to that site without an effort being made to market the site. It is highly unlikely that your site will be found in the search engines or be able to obtain rankings, without an effective marketing effort.

Unless you research keywords, develop content related to those keywords and optimize your site, you cannot presume that any search engine will capture the words on your website and display them when someone does a search. In addition, you must then undertake a strategic marketing effort to promote your site in every possible way. Failure to engage in the aforementioned will almost certainly limit any success you seek. Marketing is vital to your success!

Further, Affiliate Partners must make smart choices by marketing affiliate products that have relevance to the site that they maintain and promote. For instance, if you market a website about weight loss or diet, visitors to your site will expect your site to contain before and after images of people who have lost weight and some information about how the weight was lost. So, with effective marketing strategies visitors will go to your site, see the images, read your comments and perhaps post a comment of their own.

Since visitors to your website have an interest in weight loss, you should make sure that any ads on your site is also related to weight loss or diet. If you do, you will generate much more revenue than you will if you have ads on your site about unrelated topics/subjects. You do not want to mismatch the product with potential customers.

Another common misconception is that once the site is published, it doesn’t need to be changed or refreshed. Fresh content is a sure way to build and keep a loyal following of readers and visitors to your site. If a visitor has a reason to go to your site multiple times, it is likely that those repeat visitors are looking for fresh/new content and will click on something that appears new as well as click on something they may have especially liked the first time they visited.

You do not want to limit your chances of being successful at Affiliate Marketing by keeping the original content on your site. You need something to entice people to re-visit and spread the word about your site.

Remember, by taking time to actively promote your site, provide fresh content and ensure that the ads on it connect to the theme of your site, you stand a better chance at success with affiliate marketing.
