First, I have to be honest – I probably wouldn’t have chosen either Multilevel Marketing or Internet Marketing if the economic downturn had not changed my retirement plans. I would have preferred to be sailing, kayaking, jogging, mountain biking, or playing golf all day, rather than spending a couple hours a day running an Internet Marketing business. What is nice now is that I have the rest of the day to do all those things, and I can pick and choose the days that I actually spend any time at all running my business.
However, I didn’t have the luxury of playing all day, for two reasons. The first reason is that the total value of my retirement portfolio plummeted to about half of what I thought it was going to be. The second reason is that the cost of everything I have to buy has increased, or, at least costs more than I thought it was going to cost. Either way, the bottom line was that I had to postpone my retirement due to lack of sufficient funds.
I had been involved in multilevel marketing (MLM) for 15 years. It was a very positive experience, and it produced a nice part-time income for our family during those years. In our early 60’s, my wife and I decided to “retire” to our mountain house in a small town a couple of hours from our home in the valley. I had arranged with a friend to manage his commercial property for a salary that would enable us to simplify our lifestyle and enjoy spending more time outdoors.
As the economy began to tumble, my friend had to tighten his budget and downsize his operation. I wanted to be able to continue to live in our little mountain town, so I began to look at ways that I could work out of my home. I didn’t want to rebuild my MLM business, mostly because I knew that would require relocating to a more metropolitan area (one of the realities of building a successful MLM business.) I wanted to be able meet people and not have to always look at them as “prospects,” and I didn’t want to continue to attend regular monthly meetings.
Another friend offered me an opportunity to work for him as a freight broker. My geographic location was not an issue, and I would be free to spend as much time as I wanted brokering freight. I soon discovered that the best times of the day to broker freight are first thing in the morning and last thing in the afternoon. With clients on both coasts, that meant being on or near the phone and computer from 6 or 7AM on the east coast to 5 or 6 PM on the west coast. That didn’t fit into the lifestyle we had planned.
As I continued to search the Internet for ways to make money, I came upon an individual who was a successful Internet Marketer. I didn’t really know anything about Internet Marketing but I liked the personal freedom that it offered, so I spent several months checking out how to become an Internet Marketer.
What I discovered helped me decide between Internet Marketing and Multilevel Marketing. Internet Marketing offered me the attributes of a home based business that I had been looking for, without the downside aspects of MLM.
