The cutting edge trend that is in the Now is Mobile Marketing. In many countries outside of the United States the digital wallet is taking over. Bloomberg Businessweek says, “TECHNOLOGY The retailers clever little helper” (proven statement). “Along with the debatable social benefit of letting people constantly broadcast their whereabouts, the services are designed to give businesses the chance to tailor deals to patrons and for enduring relationships with the otherwise unidentified folks who may be their best customers.” You know longer need to use an App on your phone, this is called Revenue- LOTS!!

Some fun facts to share, did you know:

1. In 2008, there were 270 million mobile subscribers in US!
2. There were 84 billion texts sent each month in 2008, in 2009 a trillion sent!
3. There are 152 billion text messages sent every month in the US!
4. 3 to 1 cell phones to computers!
5. 90% of text messages are read within 1 minute!
6. 57% of cell phone users text regularly!
7. Predicted, Mobile ad spend to $115 Billion by 2013!

The first text message was sent in 1992. Today, texts sent and received each day exceed the earth’s total population. In 2009 our worlds population was 6,797,100,000 and 4,600,000,000 out of that are mobile users and 285,610,580 are from the U.S. That is 67.6% of the worlds population and “91% of the U.S.” So with that- Let’s do some Mobile Marketing!

According to Wireless Intelligence, the global mobile market grew by almost 200 million connections in the fourth quarter of 2009 to reach 69 per cent penetration. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for 62 per cent of the 192.8 million new connections added in the quarter. That’s 2.1bn subs out of 4.7bn. Meanwhile Western Europe has 519 million connections (11 per cent of the total), Americas has 504 million (just under 11 per cent) and Eastern Europe has 480 million (ten per cent).

How does this work? A Common Short Code (CSC) is a five or six digit, carrier approved number that mobile phone subscribers use to send Short Message Service (SMS) messages in order to receive information, promotions, alert and branded content on their mobile devices. This is mutually beneficial to consumers and brands. The CSC campaigns have proven to be more effective than traditional marketing methods like email or banner ads. They achieve over a 90% opt-in rate compared to 22.1% for email.

Let’s look at RESULTS… The Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium benefits by using Mobile Marketing for building revenue- the CSC campaign generated 325% more entries then a web based call to action at 25% of the ads, 52% of the total entries came from the short code campaign.

Another well know consumer with excellent results would be Ashley Furniture Home Store. Their 4 day Secret Sale was only promoted by email and SMS. After subtracting the discounts from coupons, Ashley Furniture sold $122 dollars of merchandise for every dollar spent on SMS and $76 for every dollar spent on email.

The ever so famous, American Idol is popularizing the use of text message-based voting campaigns. Other consumers can execute contests, rewards programs,embedded viral marketing capabilities and application downloads. These business’s using this technique are successfully using short code marketing to drive sales, build brands, acquire customers and improve loyalty.

Jiffy Lube, Planet Funk… MGM (how clever) used short codes to get prospective travelers to join its mobile marketing database. Consumers that opted in could participate in promotions that included discounts for hotel rooms, amenities, dining and show tickets. Once the customer is on MGM property, MGM can also provide targeted promotions. Pizza Hut, NASCAR, Walgreens, Subway, Best Buy, Papa Johns- ha, Obama’s Presidential Campaign… I could keep going.
