It hasn’t taken long for me to realize that there is tremendous value in legitimate network marketing. So much so that Robert Kiyosaki, Donald Trump, Warren Buffet and many other financially successful people endorse the concept.

All types of businesses have a level or success or disappointment. Whether the business format is traditional or network marketing, success requires sacrifice, effort, discipline, consistency and work ethics.

Market conditions and the economy are outside our control yet they play an important role on financial success, distress or disappointment. That’s why it’s important to focus on what we can control, learn to adapt, adjust, create, innovate and have an ethical and actionable Plan B, especially when traditional income generation methods no longer work like they used to.

People who truly have a strong desire and motivation to win and have a product or service that’s in high demand will likely succeed through a legitimate network marketing opportunity.

The more I thought about the concept of network marketing, the more I began to realize that when I was selling real estate in Utah (12 years), I was involved in a type of network marketing. I recruited buyers and sellers, I sold my services to them either through personal contact or marketing and advertising. I asked for or received referrals from them. I asked if their friends, associates or family members needed real estate services.

I also had to get my name out there. All of that involved marketing within my network. My broker was my upline, I was the distributor and my clients were my downline. My vehicle to generate income was real estate sales. For you it might have been mortgage lending. Both require networking, marketing, presenting, talking to and persuading people to buy.

Despite the variation in compensation methods, I can see similarities between network marketing and working on commission as a sales person. Both systems involve talking to people and getting them to say yes to a product or service that benefits them. With an open mind, it’s easy to see that network marketing and “recruting” people is something that many sales people have been doing for ages and probably never really thought of it as “network marketing.” If you’re in sales, you typically build networks or people and market to them. The key difference is duplication. Duplication can make you rich. Lack thereof can make you work harder than you have to.

As most traditional jobs become harder to find and retain and when the typical paycheck is barely enough to survive on and often not enough to succeed, there is no doubt that millions of people are going to be looking for ways to make exponential income.

I realize that some people swear by network marketing while others, when they hear about it, simply swear. But, isn’t that the case with a lot of businesses out there? It’s no secret that, in Utah especially, many people dislike network marketing (MLM) while others simply love it. In my personal opinion, the ones that don’t like it, either generalize everything having to do with network marketing as a scam or they got involved in an opportunity without due diligence and ended up getting duped. Many of them are still somewhat bitter about network marketing.

Many didn’t succeed – myself included – because they didn’t give the opportunity enough time to grow or they neglected to work the opportunity. They may have quit too soon or too easily. Many companies voluntarily or involuntarily shut down.

Have you ever met people who got into the real estate or mortgage business hoping to make a fortune only to drop out after 3-6 months with no listings, loans, buyers or closings? Then we tend to say things like: “I tried, but it didn’t work!”

In hindsight, there was one network marketing opportunity I should of stayed with back in 1989 when I was only 2 levels below the company’s founders, I could be a millionaire today but ‘wouldaves, couldaves, shouldaves’ and all the unfulfilled dreams do not solve financial challenges of the present. While some of us are still ordering from the left side menu at McDonald’s, I look forward to improving our family’s financial future.

I have found two companies that have been around for years and both pass the BBB and FTC scrutiny. I know that I will be focusing on “marketing” these two opportunities in 2011 along with thousands of people who are doing the same thing. After doing my homework, I found both companies boast proven track records, pay as promised and are legitimate, legal business opportunities.
