If you’ve been looking into internet marketing you will have heard the term niche marketing no doubt! But how do you exactly define a “niche” and “micro niche”?

Before we look at successful micro niches we need to start with your potential customer. That customer is part of a “market”.

Online Markets.

A market is defined as “a community of people who share a common interest in a particular subject or activity”. In addition they mostly have their own language made up of very specific terms and acronyms.

Think about golf for example. The market is “golfers” and their area of interest is obviously “golf”. If you would join a chat between a few golfers, you will quickly come across some rather strange language, like “Texas wedge” (putter when used off the green) or “apron” (grassy area surrounding the putting surface). These specific are niche markets in their own rights, so let’s look at niche markets in more detail now.

Niches & How They Relate To Markets.

A niche is simply a subset of a market that relates to a specific topic within this market. If we look at the golf market from the example above, a niche market would “golf swing” or “golf shoes”. You get it? It’s really just something specific in the chosen market. Sometimes people also talk about “micro niches” – this means nothing else than a niche within niche, so “golf shoes” turns into “men’s golf shoes” or “rainproof golf shoes”.

Why is it a good idea to target micro niches and not the whole market? It’s less competition in a micro niche and it’s a lot easier to rank in Google for very specific terms! In search engine language these terms are referred to as keywords or keyword phrases.

A Word On Keywords

Keywords are the words or phrases that members of a market type into a search engine in order to explore a particular niche.

Imagine Frank is searching for “golf shoes outdoor” and John is searching for “golf shoes rainproof”. Even though they are both essentially looking for the same thing, the results in Google are mostly likely quite different because of different focus. They are looking for the same niche, but get a different view of the niche the way they search.

For online business owners it’s important to choose valuable niches, because traffic vaeries greatly for different keywords. You might get 266 people a day searching for “tiger woods shoes”, but only 79 “golfing shoes”. In general high traffic keywords are valued more.
