So many Internet marketers are lured by the testimony of other marketers on how they struck it rich making money online, that they find themselves running ragged on managing their websites, managing their keyword buys, writing newsletters, and keeping their social networks updated.

And yet month after month their bottom line has not improved.

That only forces them to try harder, buy more eBooks, attend more seminars, and subscribe to more expensive Internet marketing memberships.

They’ve simply lost sight of Internet marketing’s true goal, to work less.

What the Internet offers us marketers is the ability to create a stream of targeted, purchase-willing visitors ready to click on ads and buy products. But when a marketer finds that visitors are not coming in, or are not willing to click on ads, they react by working longer hours and investing more of their money.

And that’s where the irony comes in. The reason for getting into this line of work to harness the power of the Internet, to let it do the work for you, and maximize your profits. But yet here they are spending more time, and more money, and not making any of it back. Ultimately, their quality of life suffers.

So how does an Internet marketer fix this?

You have to keep focus on what the true goal of Internet marketing is about. It’s about making more money, while does less work. It’s about leveraging the unique characteristics of the Internet, and its unique dynamics, to do more of the work for you.

If you come up with an idea for a website, or an idea to market something, your thought should be, “How much on-going management will this demand of me?”

And then you should ask, “Will the profits exceed the amount of work I put into it?”

I’ve launched many websites that attracted large audiences, only to discover later that I had to put in a lot of recurring labor to keep it going, and the revenue wasn’t paying me back for that work. That’s the definition of a bad business idea.

If you find yourself expending more labor and capital into an idea than the amount of revenue it’s paying back, you need to take a break and seriously evaluate that. You should be looking for ideas that do the opposite, require less time and investment, and yields more profit in return.

Google, Facebook, Twitter, RSS, E-mail, are all tools that you can use to automate processes, leverage audiences, and eliminate redundancies. Think about how you can use them to your advantage. Don’t just jump into an idea headfirst.
