A common pitfall is not placing enough emphasis on what motivates a person to purchase the product you are promoting. By applying a couple of additional marketing tactics detailed below you will be able to hone in on the ideal customer for your product. With a more targeted audience you will see a higher click through ratio and end sales figures.

So exactly what is market research? according to Wikidpedia “Market research is for discovering what people want, need, or believe. It can also involve discovering how they act. Once that research is completed, it can be used to determine how to market your product.”

Remember you don’t have a business without sales and to drive sales you need to connect with your customer on a personal level. Nobody wants to be “sold” something. Instead, they want to be understood. If they have a problem, they want some compassion and help. If they are have a passion for something, they will talk to others with the same interest. The savvy consumer looks for a referral from someone they trust. Internet marketing is no different. It doesn’t matter what product you promote, if you seem trustworthy and real, your product will be better received. To do this you must know your product well and understand why someone would need or want the product.

There are many ways to get in touch with your “inner” customer and discover what is market research. Having a survey is one method. Usually, for a survey to be effective you will need to have a large targeted response. This can be a bit of a draw back. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to take surveys. I presume most people don’t. One way that I have gotten people to take a survey is to offer a free item in exchange for their opinion. This has worked really well for me, and I have gotten great leads from websites that list free things.

Another way to get to know your customer better is to follow the forums that relate to either the “problem” your product solves or the actual “product”. Popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN all have forums. To find a Google forum simply do a Google search and then in the results page look to the right and click the word “more”. An additional set of options will reveal and you can click onto the discussions option to find forums relating to your search word. The nice thing about forums is that they are by people who both have a problem and a solution. A person will post a concern and then some helpful persons will comment with suggested solutions. You are getting an up close and personal account of both why someone needs a particular product, and why that product would be good for them. Viola! You are connecting with your customer.
