Keeping the kids entertained during the school holidays is never an easy task. Due to the cold weather, the July school holidays are often the hardest to fill. Melbourne has a plethora of school holiday activities on offer, so with a little pre-planning you can find something different to do each day and your kids will have the best holidays ever.

Kids Go Wild at the Zoo

The Melbourne Zoo offers a school holiday program each day of the school holidays and is aimed at children aged 5 to 12. Kids will get the opportunity to chat with the zoo keepers, meet animals up close and hang out with other animal loving kids – a great way to spend the day while mum and dad are at work. Werribee Open Range Zoo offers a similar ‘Keeper for a Day’ program as does the Healesville Sanctuary.

The Melbourne Magic Festival

Running right across the school holidays, the Melbourne Magic Festival has a huge range of shows and activities for both children and adults. There are numerous magic shows, several magic workshops including ‘Magic School with Tim Credible’ and ‘Learn Easy Magic’, along with ‘the Australian Junior Close Up Magic Championships’ and more. Book some Melbourne accommodation and spend a few days being amazed. You never know, you may learn a trick or two.

Federation Square School Holiday Program

Each school holidays there are a range of free activities for kids held at Federation Square. In previous years these have included live street theatre, ‘The Light in Winter’ – an interactive installation of lights and sounds for children to explore, storytelling and crafts. At the time of writing this article the winter program was yet to be announced but will soon be available on the Federation Square website. There are a number of great Melbourne CBD hotels nearby – why not make a weekend of it and book a room for the night?

The Old Melbourne Gaol

The Old Melbourne Gaol hosts a selection of activities during each school holidays that include re-enactments, the ‘Watch House Experience’ where kids get to experience what it was like to be arrested and locked up for a short time, along with scary and weird storytelling. There’s also a Family Night Tour that explores the dark history of the gaol and the many ghost sightings – book the family in if you dare! Book a night in one of the many Melbourne hotels and make a mini holiday of it.

Winter Fun in the Docklands

The Icehouse ice-skating rink in the docklands is hosting a Winter Skate Festival during the July school holidays. The Festival is themed on Ice Age 4 and features two daily Ice Age shows, giant inflatable snow balls, loads of giveaways and games and ‘real snow’. The winter fun continues across the road at Harbour Town with an ICE AGE 4 craft workshop and a snow play area. There will also be themed nights for teenagers, free learn to skate sessions and dedicated family rink times. The Docklands area is also putting on a spectacular on Friday nights through July, along with an animal farm for the kiddies and several of the restaurants are offering ‘kids eat free’ with a paying adult deals throughout the school holiday period. With a range of good Melbourne accommodation nearby, it is easy to book a room and spend a couple of days exploring the Docklands.

Choose a couple of activities that are suitable for your family, book a Melbourne hotel and you’ll give your kids a holiday experience they’ll love, and you don’t even have to leave the city!
