The July school holidays are the coldest holidays of the year, so keeping the kids entertained isn’t as easy as just heading to the beach. Sydney has a huge range of activities for kids on offer this July, ranging from live theatre to star watching and even climbing the Harbour Bridge. Many of the activities need to be booked in advance so now is the time to think about how you are going to spend the July school holidays.
Museums
The Rocks Discovery Museum, located in the historic Rocks district, runs a series of school holiday programs each school holidays, including ‘Hands on Discovery’, a program designed to teach children how the indigenous Cadigal people lived: gathering and preparing food, fishing, hunting and canoeing on Sydney harbour. There is also a ‘Children Stepping Back in Time’ program which shows children how colonial families lived and includes a visit to one of the oldest buildings in the Rocks.
The Powerhouse Museum, located in Darling Harbour, also offers a range of school holiday activities along with its normal exhibitions. Activities range from children’s shows and storytelling, for kids aged 3 and up, science workshops for primary school aged children to filmmaking workshops for secondary school children.
There are a number of great Sydney hotels in both Darling Harbour and the Rocks, offering great deals for families over the school holidays. Book a room and make a weekend of it.
The Sydney Observatory
There are a range of both day and night programs for kids run through the July school holidays at the Sydney Observatory. See one of the 3-D movies in the space theatre, tour the telescopes or partake in a science and archaeology game. For older kids, book in to one of the ‘Rings of Saturn Pizza Nights’, a great activity for the whole family. Book a night in one of the many hotels in the Sydney CBD and take the kids for a mini holiday.
Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour has a huge range of activities on offer these coming school holidays. The Chinese Gardens offers penjing making (the art of creating miniature landscapes), origami and Chinese fan making and even kung fu workshops. The newly renovated playground at Darling Quarter is now open and can easily keep the kids entertained for a few hours. There’s also the Sydney aquarium and Wild Life Sydney within easy walking distance; both great activities for all ages. The Imax theatre also has a selection of movies showing suitable for children and families, ranging from 3-D wildlife documentaries to the latest block buster movies. There are a number of great Sydney hotels in the Darling Harbour area that can accommodate families. Book a room for the night and spend two days exploring all Darling Harbour has to offer.
Sydney Opera House
Spend a day at the iconic Sydney Opera House and expose your children to a bit of culture. The Creative Play program run by the Sydney Opera House each school holidays is aimed at children aged 5 to 12 years, and this July is themed around comedy. Kids will get to hear silly stories, explore witty ways with words and have fun with gags. The hilarious ‘Goon-like’ family show ‘More Fun Than a Wii’ is also running over the school holidays in the Studio.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb
For older children (age 10+), the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is an exhilarating experience. Take them to the top of the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and show them the city of Sydney, Sydney Opera House and magnificent Sydney Harbour spread out before them like they’ve never seen them before. This is an experience for the whole family and one that will never be forgotten. For an extra special treat book a room in one of the many hotels in Sydney and do the night climb or the dawn climb.
